Wilma Mankiller
1.
What source did you
review and who created it? What perspective do you think it is meant to
convey?
I used the resource Wilma
Mankiller regarding challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous
People. Wilma being the former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation was the
main speaker of the entire video. I think the video was trying to convey the
importance of responsibility that we as humans have to protect the earth, and what
is around us for the future generations. She spoke regarding everyone all
around the world, many are making an effort and are worried but that natives
are more understanding of why saving the earth is so important. Through
storytelling and ceremonies, the natives have a very strong understanding and
respect to everything around them. So according to Wilma, they have a bigger
issue and have the most to lose.

2. 2. Why do you think these
web resources where selected and put into this course and not others? What
makes a quality academic website and do you think the website you reviewed is
one?
I think the resource was selected as Wilma spoke
world wide Indigenous people and what is
happening in nature. It brought up important points of the past and what needs
to be done in the future. It was selected because it shows how important
standing up for their rights. There may be other resources not used at this
point because there may not have shown the same importance of what is a current
issue in native communities. Education regarding Natives is very important to
non-natives so that they there is more knowledge for everyone. It is relevant
to make sure it is known that education is so important to everyone to protect
the earth.
3. 3. What is the purpose of
making a Native American focused journal into a blog? Why do you think I have
encouraged you to share the knowledge you have gained in a more public forum,
beyond the virtual classroom?I think the purpose of having the Native American journal into a
blog as it seems to be a place where you can write more freely. I have never
have wrote this type of setting before but I felt that is isn’t as pressured as
academic work. It made me feel like it was based on my opinion on resources
that were given, not just writing the facts alone. I can expand more of
experiences I have seen or heard in the blogs. I do not think as many responses
are added in the blogs though as the discussions have.

Hi Cory,
ReplyDeleteI agree that it was interesting to hear about indigenous peoples around the world. This course has helped me to expand my understanding of the indigenous people in North America, but their experiences are certainly not unique, nor are their values. It's been a pleasure learning alongside you!
I agree that the experiences are not unique, but not every culture that has been treated badly has been swept under the rug as much. It was a pleasure as well!
