USET
The resource I chose was the website for the United Southern and Eastern Tribes (USET). This organization was incorporated in 1969. It is an inter-tribal organization that represents its member Tribal Nations at both local and national levels. Its mission statement reads “United South and Eastern Tribes, Inc. is dedicated to enhance the development of Tribal governments and assisting the USET Members and their governments in dealing effectively with public policy issues and in serving the broad needs Indian people”. This organization was formed, is its homepage states “Because there is strength in Unity”, and now consists of twenty-seven recognized Tribal Nations. Among its objectives and purposes are:
a. To promote Indian leadership in order to move forward in the ultimate, desirable goal of complete Indian involvement and responsibility at all levels in Indian affairs; b. To lift the bitter yoke of poverty from our people through cooperative effort; c. To promote better understanding of the issues involving Indian Tribes and other people; d. To advocate for more effective use of existing local, state, federal, and international resources; e. To promote a forum for exchange of ideas; f. To combine our voices so we can be heard clearly by local, state, federal, and international governments; g. To dedicate ourselves to improvement of the quality of life for American Indians through increased health, education, social services and housing opportunities; h. To reaffirm the commitments of our Tribes to the treaties and agreements heretofore entered into with the Federal Government in a government-to-government relationship and to promote the reciprocity of this relationship and those agreements and treaties; and i. To provide protection of tribal natural resources.
Its departments include: Office of Environmental Resource Management, Economic Developments and Tribal Health Program Support. The resources include Scholarships for Native Students, Upcoming Consultation and Consultation Policy. I was impressed when I saw that in addition to the Indian Country Calendar, they also have a link to the calendar for the United States Senate so that members can be aware when appropriate bills are being introduced.
This website is an excellent example of how Native Americans are joining together to be proactive, defend their rights and declare they are no longer victims.

I looked around at the website, it really shows unity of Natives. It has many points where the Natives are working together to defend what is theirs, and making sure they have a good quality of life. I hope that they can continue to build these Nations.
ReplyDeleteI looked around a little too, this is a great site. Besides having history about Native American, it also list numerous programs that are available to the Native American community in time of need. The community have great resources and the mission statement says it all “Because there is Strength in Unity”.
