United South and Eastern Tribes Inc.

I reviewed the website of the United South and Eastern Tribes Inc.. The website was created by this group (USET) to help communicate their mission effectively and to larger audience, while providing resources for tribal people whom interests are represented by the group as well as the greater public. USET is a not for profit. Inter-tribal organization that was founded in 1969. The groups aim is to represent the interests of tribal people from tribes located in the American south and eastern regions. It is advocacy group that focuses primarily on protecting the sovereignty of Native American tribes in the regions that it’s member tribes come from. The group represents 27 distinct tribal nations and in addition to representing their issues in a larger space also helps to navigate issues between it’s member tribes and their relations with tribes from other regions of the United States. The website provides a wealth of information on the group including their history, current mission and resources for members as well as interested outside groups and individuals. Additionally this website helps the member groups to understand and keep up to date on important information and events that effect United South and East Tribes as a group and the tribes themselves. A calendar area helps to notify interested parties of upcoming and past events that the group has held or been a part of. This websites is of great importance to the groups as a means to communicate their goals and relevant information in a technologically relevant way.

  1. The web site is really well organized and informative. I looked at the calendar and in October the Native Americans held the Annual Meeting of the members of National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition in Carlisle, PA. The Coalition is located in Minneapolis, MN and its web site contains lots of interesting information as well.

  2. After exploring the website USETINC.org it doesn't take long to understand the amount of work that this organization has done for the almost 30 tribes and their ability to address issues under a common interest for their people. The organization has a D.C. office and is obviously a very politically active entity which is clearly demonstrated at the following link: https://www.usetinc.org/uset-sovereignty-protection-fund/legislation-policy/testimony/

For 8 years they have been advocating legislation on various subjects, issues and initiatives.

Also I enjoyed there news section full of up to date news articles provided solely be credible sources. The first I read found here: https://www.usetinc.org/news/the-native-americans-who-saved-the-pilgrims-could-lose-their-land-again-11-22-2018/ is about a court battle currently going on in Massachusetts that could have consequences for tribes throughout the U.S. The 2,600 members of the Mashpee tribe has been trying to secure a permanent home since before the Revolutionary war. After being restored federal recognition in 2007, the tribe asked for two pieces of land to be given reservation status about 300 acres, but it took over 8 years to be granted the land.

The problem for the Mashpee tribe and the other 127 tribes that have gained federal recognition status after 1934 and obtained reservations is the Carcieri Decision. The author of the article fears "the beginning of a new termination era". The Carcieri decision ruled that the federal government could not take land into trust from tribes that were federally recognized and acquired land after 1934.
